Russia is trying to increase its influence on the process of demarcating the borders of Armenia and Azerbaijan by providing its expertise and cartographic data.

Russia has consistently supported the process of delimiting and demarcating the borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Alexei Overchuk, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, confirmed that Moscow stands ready to provide cartographic materials upon request, highlighting the availability of crucial geographical data to assist in this complex process. His comments were reported by Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

“We have always supported this process,” Overchuk asserted, emphasising Russia’s long-standing commitment to the border delimitation between the two neighbouring countries, while underscoring Moscow’s significant experience in this area, including its work with Azerbaijan itself.

The Deputy Prime Minister made it clear that Russia is prepared to offer consultative assistance, drawing on its extensive expertise in managing similar projects. “In terms of cartographic resources, we possess the necessary materials, which can be provided upon request to the parties involved in the delimitation and demarcation process,” he added.

When asked about the status of the trilateral working group co-chaired by himself, alongside Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts Shahin Mustafayev and Mger Grigoryan, Overchuk confirmed that “formally, it has not been discontinued”. However, he noted that discussions on border issues continue, albeit now in a more bilateral framework. “We regularly discuss this matter, but not in a trilateral format,” he explained. He further highlighted that substantial progress has been made within the specialised commission working on the matter.

He also pointed out that certain sections of the borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan have already been defined, with negotiations now focused on moving southwards from the northern border junction between Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, towards the southern boundary with Iran. “We have always welcomed such contacts and collaborative efforts, as they undoubtedly contribute to regional stability,” he concluded.

Recently, following a meeting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani delimitation commissions, an agreement was reached to begin the border demarcation process from the northern section — at the junction of the borders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia — and continue southward towards the Iran-Azerbaijan-Armenia border.
